Sightseeing·5 stops·Thimphu
Why we include it · Housed in the old watchtower above Paro dzong, with the best single collection of Bhutanese textiles and thangkas.
Good to know · Circular building on seven levels. Photography is not permitted inside.
Why we include it · The Paro dzong, and the one you will recognise from the film Little Buddha. Approached across a traditional cantilever bridge.
Good to know · The walk up from the bridge takes about 15 minutes. Best photographed late afternoon.
Why we include it · Reached across an iron chain bridge built by a 15th-century bridge-builder saint. The chains are original.
Good to know · The bridge is a short stop en route between Paro and Thimphu, not a destination in itself.
Why we include it · The takin is Bhutan's national animal and exists almost nowhere else. It looks like the result of an argument between a goat and a cow, which is roughly what the local legend says it is.
Good to know · Open enclosure rather than a zoo. Morning visits are best for activity.
Why we include it · The seat of the Bhutanese government and the King's throne room — a working building rather than a museum.
Good to know · Only open to visitors after office hours on weekdays, and all day at weekends. Formal dress expected.
