The marble mausoleum Shah Jahan built for Mumtaz Mahal, finished in 1653 after twenty-two years of work. Inlaid throughout with semi-precious stone, and symmetrical to the last detail apart from Shah Jahan's own tomb.

Good to know · Closed Fridays. Go at opening — the marble changes colour through the morning and the crowds arrive by nine.
The Mughal capital's red sandstone fort, from which Akbar, Jahangir and Shah Jahan ruled. Shah Jahan spent his last eight years imprisoned here by his son, with a view of the Taj.
