Why we include it · The same break in the border-to-Thimphu drive, taken via Gedu at 9,000 ft — the point on the climb where the subtropical forest gives out and the air changes. Most itineraries drive it without stopping.
Good to know · A long driving day. The temple stop and the Gedu viewpoint are the only real pauses.
A monastery on the hillside above Phuentsholing with the Bengal plains laid out below — the first Bhutanese building most travellers see on the drive up.
Why we include it · It is the first Bhutanese building you see, twenty minutes after the border, and it does the work of telling you that you have arrived somewhere different — the plains you drove across are still visible below while the architecture in front of you has already changed.
Good to know · Ten minutes by car above Phuentsholing. Shoes off inside the shrine; the terrace stays open.

Why we include it · A short stop on the way out of Phuentsholing before the climb begins, and one of the few things on this route that works for children.
Good to know · Small, and worth about twenty minutes. Gharial are easiest to see when they surface in the morning.
