Carry an original Voter ID or passport
Bhutan immigration accepts only an original Voter ID card or a passport valid six months beyond travel. Aadhaar, PAN and driving licences are not accepted, and neither is a downloaded or printed Voter ID. Children under 18 need a passport or birth certificate with a school ID.
Permits are issued at Phuentsholing, on working days
The entry permit is processed at the border immigration office, which closes on Bhutanese public holidays and weekends. Your itinerary allows for this, but a delayed arrival at Phuentsholing can cost a day.
Indian rupees are accepted, but not the big notes
Bhutan takes Indian currency at par with the Ngultrum, except 500 and 2000 rupee notes, which most establishments refuse. Carry 100s and 200s. Cards work in Thimphu and Paro but rarely elsewhere, and ATMs often decline foreign cards.
Your Indian SIM stops at the border
Indian numbers do not roam in Bhutan. A local tourist SIM from B-Mobile or TashiCell costs a few hundred Ngultrum at Phuentsholing or Thimphu. Hotel wifi is common but slow.
The SDF is already in your price
Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee of Nu 1,200 per person per night is included in what you pay us. The 5% GST and TCS are charged separately at checkout.
Dzongs have a dress code
Long trousers and sleeves that cover the shoulders are required to enter dzongs and temples; hats come off inside. Photography is allowed in courtyards but almost never inside the shrine rooms.
Breakfast and dinner are included, lunch is not
Hotels serve a fixed Indian-leaning buffet morning and evening. Lunch is on you and typically runs Nu 300-600. Bhutanese food is chilli-heavy โ ema datshi is chillies and cheese, and it is a main course, not a side.
Layers, and shoes you can walk in
Thimphu and Paro sit above 2,200 metres and drop sharply after dark even when days are mild. Dochula and Chele La are colder again. Walking shoes matter more than anything else you pack.
What the season does to the view
October to December gives the clearest Himalayan views from Dochula, which is why it is the busiest window. March to May brings rhododendrons and haze. June to August is monsoon: green, quiet, cheap, and the high peaks are often invisible for days.
