Good to know

Child rate

Children are ₹8,000 per child sharing the parents' room. Adults are ₹29,500 each.

Carry an original Voter ID or passport

Bhutan immigration accepts an original Voter ID card or a passport valid six months beyond travel. Aadhaar, PAN and driving licences are not accepted, nor is a downloaded voter ID. A child under 18 needs a passport or an original birth certificate.

The cranes arrive in late October

Phobjikha is the winter home of the black-necked cranes, which arrive from Tibet around late October and leave by February. The October departure may be early for them; November and December are the reliable ones.

The Tiger's Nest is a real climb

Four to five hours round trip, moderate difficulty, ending in about 700 steps. Ponies can be hired for the ascent only.

Entrance fees are not included

Monastery, monument and museum entrance fees are excluded, as is lunch. Budget for both.

Layers, and shoes you can walk in

Dochula is 3,150 metres and Phobjikha 3,000 — both are cold, and colder still after dark. Walking shoes matter more than anything else you pack.
