Portugal Schengen visa rejected! Applying again for Lisbon trip — what's the CHEAPEST way to convince them I'll return?

My Portugal Schengen visa got rejected last week! I applied for a 10-day trip to Lisbon from Nov 15-25. I showed hostel bookings and bus tickets, but they said 'insufficient funds' (I had like 50 euros/day in my account, which for hostels and free walking tours should be fine, no?). I just graduated, so no job letter yet, but my parents are sponsoring me. How do I reapply and show I'll return to India? Do I need to show flight tickets already booked? Any free/cheap proof of ties to India? Really want to experience Lisbon's free walking tours and street art on a shoestring budget. What's the absolute cheapest way to make my reapplication stronger?

Hey, sorry to hear about the rejection. For travel within India, like Bangalore to Hampi or Coorg, you're all set with just your ID. No visa hassles there. We see a lot of folks renting cars or bikes for these routes. Regarding your Schengen reapplication, the 'insufficient funds' comment is usually strict. They often look for a buffer beyond just daily expenses. For showing ties, property documents in your parents' name, a fixed deposit statement, or even a detailed sponsorship letter from your parents mentioning their financial stability and your return plans can help. If you have any ongoing commitments like a part-time course enrollment or volunteer work here, that's also good. Booking flights is risky before a visa, but some airlines offer cancellable tickets or a 'hold' option for a small fee, which you can show as proof of planned return. For the cheapest option, focus on strengthening the financial proof and showing strong family ties through official documents. Good luck!

Hey, that's really frustrating about the rejection. It happens sometimes, especially with the 'insufficient funds' reasoning even when you think you've covered it. For your reapplication, definitely get a sponsorship letter from your parents that clearly states they will cover all your expenses, along with their bank statements showing good funds. Even if you plan to spend 50 euros a day, the embassy often looks for a higher buffer, maybe closer to 80-100 euros a day for a smoother approval. You don't need to book actual flight tickets, but showing a 'dummy' flight itinerary (you can get these from travel agents for free or a small fee) can help fill that gap in the application. Regarding ties to India, if you don't have a job, focus on anything else strong. Do you own any property, even a small share? A property deed can work. Are you enrolled in any further studies starting next year? An admission letter or proof of application could also help. If you have any fixed deposits or investments, include those bank statements too. The goal is to show assets that make it clear you have reasons to come back.
