eSIM for Kolkata Trip with Family (Kids 7 & 10) - Data Only vs. Voice+Data - Which is Better for 10 Days?

Namaste everyone! I'm planning a 10-day family trip to Kolkata next month (15th-25th August) with my wife and two children (ages 7 and 10). We are flying from Bangalore. I'm looking into eSIM options for our phones (iPhone 13 Pro and Samsung S22 Ultra). My main concern is reliable data for navigation, booking cabs, and keeping the kids entertained with some YouTube in the evenings. However, I'm also wondering if a voice+data eSIM is more practical for local calls (e.g., to hotels, tour operators) or if WhatsApp calls will suffice. I don't want to miss any important calls from family back home on my primary number. Any recommendations based on personal experience in Kolkata for families? Is data-only sufficient or should I go for a voice-enabled one? Budget is not a huge constraint, but value for money is important.

Namaste! It's good you're planning ahead for your Kolkata trip. For 10 days, with the children, I would suggest a data-only eSIM for your iPhone and a physical SIM for your Samsung phone. This way, your primary number on the iPhone remains active for family calls, and you have dedicated data for navigation and the children's entertainment. A data-only eSIM will be sufficient for most needs, as you can use WhatsApp calls for hotels and tour operators. However, having a local physical SIM in the Samsung for voice and data can be handy for direct calls if WhatsApp isn't an option, or for any emergencies. You can get a prepaid Jio or Airtel SIM at the airport itself for around INR 300-400 with good data and calling plans. Just remember to carry extra passport photos and ID. For the data-only eSIM, look for plans with at least 20-30GB for the 10 days, just to be safe with the children's YouTube. Many providers offer these for around INR 800-1200. Do inquire about senior citizen discounts if you are booking any package tours or even at some hotels. Have a lovely trip to Kolkata!

For your Kolkata sojourn, particularly with the monsoon sky looming in August, an eSIM is a sensible choice. I’d lean towards a data-only plan for ease and efficiency. The city’s pulse, much like the rhythm of a Saratchandra novel, is best experienced without the constant jingle of calls, and your primary number will remain active for urgent family matters back in Bangalore. Most local interactions – booking a yellow taxi, confirming a reservation at Oh! Calcutta, or even navigating the labyrinthine lanes of College Street – are easily managed through WhatsApp calls or messages, a digital convenience that Rabindranath Tagore could only have dreamed of. For your children, data will be invaluable for those quiet moments with YouTube after a day spent perhaps at the Indian Museum, or if you’re brave enough, a boat ride on the Hooghly, reminiscent of the journey in Amitav Ghosh’s *The Calcutta Chromosome*. A data-only plan will free you from the complexities of managing a local number and its associated voice tariffs. Providers like Airtel or Jio offer excellent 4G/5G coverage across Kolkata. A 20GB data plan for 10 days should suffice, costing around INR 300-400. This ensures seamless navigation to literary landmarks like Tagore House or the ancestral home of Swami Vivekananda, while also keeping your children engaged when needed.
