Beyond Palaces: Are there any high-altitude treks or viewpoints (above 800m) near Udaipur with permit requirements?

I'm a keen high-altitude trekker from Chandigarh, planning a trip to Udaipur in late November. While I appreciate the lakes and palaces, my real interest lies in underrated, less-traversed routes offering panoramic views, ideally above 800-900m elevation. Are there any genuine trekking opportunities, perhaps to a hidden peak or a forest trail with a good incline, that require special permits or have specific access rules? I'm not looking for touristy viewpoints but something more challenging. Any insights on lesser-known passes or high points within a 50-70km radius would be highly appreciated. What are the typical permit procedures, if any, for such areas?

Oh, that's an interesting question, young man. Udaipur is mostly known for its beautiful lakes and palaces, not so much for high-altitude treks like what you might find in Chandigarh. My wife and I went there last December, and it was lovely, very pleasant weather for sightseeing. We mostly stuck to the city, visiting Jagdish Temple and taking a boat ride on Lake Pichola. For views, we went up to Monsoon Palace, which is on a hill, but it's more of a drive-up spot than a trek, and quite popular with tourists. It's about 944 meters (3100 feet) high, so that fits your altitude requirement, but I don't think it's the challenging trek you're looking for. There were no permits needed for that. I don't recall seeing anything about special permits for trekking in the Aravali hills around Udaipur, not for the general public anyway. Most of the hills are quite gentle. You might find some local trails if you speak to people there, but I doubt they'd be "high-altitude" or require special permissions. Perhaps a local guide could tell you more about the lesser-known paths. Do check if there are any senior citizen discounts on the boat rides; we always do.
