Queenstown with 5yo and 8yo in July/August: Good idea or too much rain/cold?

Planning a family trip to New Zealand from Bangalore and considering Queenstown in late July or early August. We will have our two kids with us, aged 5 and 8. My wife is a bit worried about the rainy season and if it will be too cold for them to enjoy outdoor activities or even move around comfortably. We are looking for a mix of adventure (but safe for kids!) and relaxing resort time. Are there enough indoor activities or sheltered options to make it worth it, even if it rains a lot? Would prefer a family room or interconnecting rooms. Budget is around 5-7 lakhs for the NZ part of the trip. Any first-hand experiences from families who have gone during this time would be super helpful. Don't want to fly all that way for just rain!

Jambo! Planning a safari to the South Island, I see. Queenstown in July or August is their winter, which means cold temperatures, much like the chill you find in Ngorongoro Crater sometimes, and yes, it often brings snow, not just rain. Average temperatures hover around 0-8 degrees Celsius. Now, that doesn't mean the wildebeest migration of activities stops. For the kids, skiing is a huge draw at Coronet Peak or The Remarkables. There's also the Skyline Gondola and Luge, which is mostly sheltered. For indoor options, the Kiwi Birdlife Park is good, and there are several indoor playgrounds. Many resorts have heated pools, which can be a good way to relax after a day out. Your budget of 5-7 lakhs for the NZ part should be manageable, but remember winter activities like skiing can add up quickly. Look for family rooms at places like The Rees or Novotel Queenstown. They understand the pride of a family group. Just ensure you pack layers – thermal underwear, good waterproof jackets, and warm hats are your best defense against the winter elements.
