Mumbai Trip: Winter (Dec-Jan) vs. Summer (Apr-May) - Best Time for Sightseeing and Budget?

Planning my first trip to Mumbai and confused if winter (December-January) or summer (April-May) is better. My main goal is sightseeing – Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Elephanta Caves, Juhu Beach. I'm also conscious about budget for flights and hotels. Will the heat be unbearable in summer for outdoor activities? And are prices significantly higher in winter? Looking for advice from experienced travelers on best time, crowd levels, and if I need to pre-book everything much in advance for either season. Also, any tips on local transport and food would be great!

Honestly, for your main sightseeing, neither season is ideal for what I look for. You're mostly above the surface. If I had to pick, the cooler air in December-January makes walking around more bearable. You're not going to get good visibility for anything like a dive, but for surface stuff, it’s less sweaty. Currents will be minimal around the shore, so Elephanta Caves should be a smooth boat ride. Just expect more people, so pre-book your Gateway of India boat ticket if you want to avoid queues. Flights and hotels will be pricier then, but not crazy. April-May will be hot and humid, and you'll probably spend more time looking for AC than actually seeing things. The water around the coast gets murkier with pre-monsoon activity, so visibility is practically zero. Budget-wise, it might be cheaper, but you'll be uncomfortable. For your activities, you're not getting in the water anyway, so it mostly comes down to how much you can handle the heat while walking around.

Hey, I know exactly what you mean about planning trips, it’s always a balancing act. When I was studying in the UK, I learned how much difference the season makes. For Mumbai, winter (December-January) is definitely your best bet for sightseeing. The weather is much more pleasant then, around 20-25°C, perfect for walking around places like the Gateway of India or Marine Drive without feeling completely drained. Summer, especially April-May, can hit 35-40°C with high humidity, making outdoor activities pretty tough. You'd be rushing from one AC spot to another. Crowds are heavier in winter because of the good weather and holidays, so expect more people everywhere. Budget-wise, winter is peak season, so flights and hotels will be pricier. You'll need to book things like hotels in Colaba or near Marine Drive at least 2-3 months in advance if you want decent rates, perhaps 3000-5000 INR per night for a decent mid-range place. In summer, prices drop significantly; you could find similar rooms for 1500-2500 INR. But honestly, the discomfort might outweigh the savings if you're there for sightseeing. For local transport, the suburban trains are super efficient and cheap, especially if you're comfortable with crowds. Cabs and auto-rickshaws are readily available too. For food, just dive into the street food scene – vada pav, pav bhaji, and Frankie rolls are a must-try.
