NYC trip next month: How much to tip for everything? Don't want to look cheap!

Hey guys, flying to NYC next month (March 15-19) for a quick getaway with my friends. We're on a bit of a budget, but also don't want to be those clueless tourists who tip wrongly or too little. From restaurants, bars, taxis, hotel staff – what's the standard percentage or amount? Especially for quick coffee runs or just a drink at a bar? Is it different for takeout? Give me exact numbers if possible, need to plan my cash! Thanks in advance!

Hey, awesome you're hitting NYC! Hope you find some good bouldering spots while you're there. Tipping can be a bit of a maze, but here's the lowdown for March. For sit-down restaurants, 18-20% is standard. If service is really good, 22-25% is appreciated, especially if you're feeling generous. For quick coffee or takeout, usually just round up to the next dollar or throw in $1-2 per drink/item. At bars, it's typically $1-2 per drink, or 18-20% if you're running a tab. Taxis: 15-20% of the fare. Hotel staff: bellhops usually $2-5 per bag, housekeepers $3-5 per day (leave it daily with a note). For any concierge help, $5-10 depending on the complexity of their assistance. Don't sweat carrying a ton of cash; most places accept card payments for tips too. Just make sure to check your bill – some restaurants automatically add a service charge, especially for larger groups. If they do, you don't need to add more. Have a rad trip!

Hari Om! May your journey to New York be blessed with wonderful experiences. Understanding local customs for tipping is a thoughtful way to show respect, much like knowing the proper attire for a temple visit. For full-service restaurants, the standard offering is 18-20% of your bill before tax. If the service truly resonates with you, 22-25% is a generous blessing. At bars, for each drink, a dollar or two is customary. For coffee shops, if you're just grabbing a take-away, a dollar or two in the tip jar is a kind gesture. For a seated experience, consider 10-15%. Takeout orders don't always require a tip, but 10% is appreciated if someone assisted you significantly. When traveling by taxi, 15-20% of the fare is appropriate. For hotel staff, like bellhops who help with your luggage, $2-5 per bag is a good offering. Housekeeping staff can be given $3-5 per day, left daily with a small note. Remember, these are guidelines, and your heart will guide you on what feels right. Enjoy your spiritual journey through the vibrant city!
